The Family Support Agency is a Government Agency operating under the aegis of the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs. Established in 2003 the Agency has over 50 staff and a Chief Executive Officer, Mr Pat Bennett. The Agency is overseen by a Board appointed by the Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs. The Family Support Agency was set up to provide support to families. The Agency's second Strategic Plan, covering 2007 to 2009, is grounded in a firm belief in the fundamental importance of families and family life for individuals, communities and society generally.
VECs throughout the country provide second level education to nearly 100,000 students in 247 schools. More than 200,000 adults each year participate in VEC adult and community education programmes. A wide range of learning opportunities are available through local VECs to people who want to improve their skills and qualifications and to those seeking a second educational chance. The VECs run these further education and training programmes in schools and colleges, adult education centres of education, workplaces and in a variety of community settings.
Probation
The Probation Service is part of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. They assess and manage offenders in the community on behalf of the Courts Service and the Prison Service, and in the process help to make society safer. They also work in prisons and detention centres
Social, Personal and Health Education, as part of the curriculum, supports the personal development, health and well-being of young people and helps them create and maintain supportive relationships.
Social, Personal and Health Education in Post-Primary schools is a programme for students in the Junior Cycle and builds on the experience of all children at Primary level
Pieta House are actively helping to change the problems of Suicide and Self-Harm in Ireland, a problem which takes more lives than road accidents every year
CityWide
CityWide works to promote and support a community development approach to the drugs problem - this means involving the people who are most affected by the problem in dealing with the problem - drug users, their families and communities.
The Tallaght Drugs task force (TDTF) is one of 14 local drugs task forces which were set up in 1997 in areas which are experiencing high levels of drug misuse. Like othe task forces, TDTF comprises a partenership between local statutory, voluntary and community sectors. Their role is to prepare and oversee the implementation of the Governments national drug strategy at a local level by encouraging co-ordination and co-operation between services and by consulting with local communities to design and deliver services.
